Custom vs Ready-Made Leather Jacket: Which Should You Buy?
Short answer: a ready-made leather jacket is faster and easier to return; a custom leather jacket fits better and, at Leather Taboo, costs the same. If you are a standard size with average proportions, ready-made is fine. If you are between sizes, have a large chest-to-waist drop, long or short arms, or you ride and need the leather to sit exactly right, custom is the better buy.
Side by side
| Ready-made (standard size) | Custom (made to measure) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Good if you match the size chart | Cut to your five measurements |
| Price at Leather Taboo | Listed price | Same; no surcharge |
| Lead time | Made to order; production time confirmed before payment | Same process, same timeline |
| Returns | 14-day window under the refund policy | Ask before ordering; custom items are cut to you |
| Design changes | As listed | Colour, lining, hardware and length can be requested |
| Risk | Size-chart mismatch | Mis-measurement (use a friend and measure twice) |
When ready-made is the right call
You wear the same size in most brands, your shoulders and chest are in proportion, and you want the option to return the jacket if the style is not what you pictured. Standard sizes S–4XL cover most builds, and every jacket in the men's and women's collections is made to order in those sizes.
When custom is the right call
- You are between two sizes and always compromise.
- Your chest and waist are more than 8 inches apart.
- Your arms are long or short for your height.
- You ride and want the leather to sit right in the tuck.
- You want a colour, lining or hardware that is not listed.
- You are ordering a corset, catsuit or motorcycle suit, where fit is the whole product.
How the custom process works
- Take the five measurements in this guide.
- Send them, with the product you want and any changes, through the custom order page.
- We confirm the production time and price before you pay.
- The jacket is cut to your numbers, stitched, checked and shipped tracked from the USA.
What custom does not fix
Custom sizing gives you the right shoulder, chest, sleeve and length. It does not change the style's basic shape: a biker jacket is still short, a café racer is still slim. If you want a different shape, choose a different style and then make it custom.
Frequently asked questions
Does custom really cost the same?
Yes. Every piece is cut to order anyway, so cutting to your numbers instead of a chart adds no cost.
What if my measurements are wrong?
We check them for consistency before cutting and ask if something looks off. Measure with a friend and send the numbers twice a week apart if you want to be sure.
Can I return a custom jacket?
Ask before you order. Custom pieces are cut to you, so the standard 14-day return window may not apply; we would rather answer that up front than after.
