A bondage bag, also sold as a leather sleep sack, body bag, or mummy sack, is a full-length enclosure cut to the shape of a person and closed with one long, heavy-duty zipper. It is one of the more specialised pieces we make at Leather Taboo, and it is also the one we get the most questions about. This guide covers what it is, how ours are built, how to size one properly, and what to look for before you spend money on one.

What is a bondage bag?

Think of it as a tailored sleeping bag made from real leather rather than nylon. The wearer steps in, arms inside, and the zipper runs from the feet up to the neck (or up to an attached hood on some designs). Because the leather has no stretch, the fit is what does the work: a well-cut bag holds the body snugly without pressure points, the way a good leather jacket holds your shoulders.

Ours are made from full cowhide, not sheepskin and not bonded or PU leather. Cowhide is heavier and stiffer, which is exactly what you want here. It keeps its shape, it does not sag after a few uses, and it stands up to a metal zipper being run through it hundreds of times.

How a Leather Taboo bondage bag is built

• Leather: 1.2 to 1.4 mm cowhide, inspected for grain consistency before cutting. Every hide is checked so both halves of the bag match.
• Zipper: one continuous heavy-gauge metal zipper, usually YKK, running the full length. A single zipper means fewer failure points than a two-piece design.
• Stitching: reinforced double-row seams down both sides and around the shoulders, where the leather takes the most strain.
• Lining: smooth viscose or satin lining so the inside does not grab skin or clothing when you zip in or out.
• Hardware: optional D-rings at the shoulders, hips, and feet for attaching to a frame or bed, plus a reinforced collar on hooded versions.

Each bag is cut, stitched, and finished by hand by our leather workers. That is why production takes longer than an off-the-shelf item, and why the fit is closer.

Getting the size right

This is where most people go wrong. A bondage bag that is too big is loose and pointless; one that is too small will not zip closed. We size by four measurements:

1. Height, head to heel, standing straight.
2. Chest at the widest point, arms down at your sides.
3. Hips at the widest point.
4. Shoulder width, measured across the back from bone to bone.

What to check before you buy any bondage bag

Whether you buy from us or someone else, these are the things that separate a bag that lasts ten years from one that splits in a season:

• Real leather, stated clearly. "Genuine leather" on a marketplace listing often means bonded scraps. Look for cowhide, and ask for the thickness.
• A metal zipper, not plastic. Plastic coil zippers fail under the tension a snug bag creates.
• Visible seam reinforcement at the shoulders and along the zipper tape.
• A quick way out. The zipper pull should be reachable from outside and should run freely in both directions.
• Honest lead times. Handmade takes time. Anyone promising a fitted leather bag in two days is not making it by hand.

Using one sensibly

A few rules we tell every customer, because they matter:

• Never use a bondage bag alone. Someone should always be present who can unzip it.
• Keep a pair of safety shears within reach of the person outside the bag.
• Start with short sessions. Leather is warm and the bag traps body heat.
• Agree on a clear signal before zipping up, and stop the moment it is used.
• Do not combine with anything that restricts airflow.

Caring for the leather

Wipe the inside down with a damp cloth after each use and let it dry flat, zipper open, away from direct heat. Every few months, work a small amount of leather conditioner into the outside. Store it laid flat or loosely rolled, never folded hard along the same crease, and never in a sealed plastic bag where moisture can build up.

What is the difference between a bondage bag and a sleep sack?

Nothing, in practice. Both names describe the same full-length leather enclosure with a single long zipper. "Body bag" and "mummy sack" are also used.
